The University of Dhaka is the oldest and most renowned university in Bangladesh. It’s also called highest education institute of Bangladesh. Dhaka University (DU) is a multi – disciplinary research university. It was modeled on Ox-bridge education. During the beginning periods, Dhaka University hosted scholars and scientists of the Subcontinent region and earned fame as the Oxford of the East.
History of Dhaka University
The university was established in 1921 by the British Government in India-subcontinent. It is the first university for the nation. Sir P.J. Hartog was the first Vice-Chancellor of the University. Academic activities started on with 3 Faculties which are Arts, Science and Law including 12 Departments.
At the beginning a characteristic attribute of the university was its no affiliating, residential character like that of the Oxford of England. On the other hand, since 1947 the University was given an affiliating permission in place of an exclusive residential-cum-teaching character.
A new chapter began in the history of the Dhaka University with the appearance of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in 1971.
Right now the Dhaka University has 13 Faculties, 71 Departments, 10 Institutes, 17 dormitories, more than 38 Research Centers. Name of these faculties are:

The Dhaka University Library housed in three divides buildings. It is the biggest library of Bangladesh. The library has more than 600,000 books collection.
Ranking of Dhaka University
In the recent past, the University of Dhaka made it into the enrollment of Top World Universities in the top ranking carried out by the ranking organization Times Higher Education and Quacquarelli Symonds, UK. Out of well above 30,000 universities around the world, Dhaka University was placed as 551.
Dhaka University is not only the pioneer of Bangladesh’s educational system but it is also playing a vital role in the world’s higher educational progress.
